Part I: The Where

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, and as many men that I interact with at The Blind Pig, it only seems right that I help you guys out in making the day great for your significant other. We are fortunate living in Portland, Maine, as there are numerous events going on throughout the city. However we tend to stick to the same date-night spots. How about trying something new? Whether a long-term relationship, a dating app first interaction, or your best friend, here are some of my top picks on how to spend the day with that special person.

Classic Dinner Date

There’s one restaurant that I can’t recommend enough! Sur Lie, located on Free Street, has become my personal favorite since moving to downtown Portland. Innovative tapas-style dining that is classy enough for any date night. The pride that goes into both food and beverage is impeccable, all while creating a great atmosphere and memorable experience for their guests. I sent my parents there on a date night last year, and it is now by far their favorite spot as well. For Valentine’s Day they are offering a four-course dinner for $45 per person or feel free to order off their regular menu. Reservations recommended. Sur Lie, 11 Free Street, Portland, Maine, (207)956-7350

Beer Lovers On A Budget

Those of us who live here have all had drinks by the big name beer companies, but there are so many small local craft brewers to try! I recently went with a friend for his birthday to the Rising Tide Brewery and had a highly informational, one-hour FREE tour. (Check out their web site for tour times.) We then got a flight of four 4oz. beers to taste for $10 and left feeling as if it was not only a good time, but also a great value. We then went just down the street to Lone Pine Brewery to their tasting room. Maine Mead Works and Urban Farm Fermentory are also only a short walk for those who aren’t a huge fan of strictly beer or who want to make a day of it hopping from one spot to the next.

Holding Out for the Weekend?

My last pick is a unique one and great for couples that may not be able to celebrate during the week or feel they have done it all. Circus Maine at Thompson’s Point is hosting “Cupid’s Night Circus”, a circus cabaret, from Friday through Sunday starting February 17. See their website or Facebook page for show times and to buy tickets in advance, which range from $14-$16. I have attended two of their events in the past and was very pleased with their level of customer service and their ability to put on a great show. The food trucks, drinks, and, in this case, cupcakes only add to the experience.
